I’ve a presentation tomorrow in which I have to tell how a data recovery software works in a nutshell. How it traverses through HD, how it judges whether the data is a complete file or Allocation Table….? How it tells what’s the file extension? etc

Dude, it sounds like you’ve put your research project off until the last minute. Sucks to be you. You aren’t going to get any answer here that is a substitute for everything that you need to know for your presentation. It’s a highly technical subject. Volumes could be written about it.
