Will a Data Recovery specialist report me to the police for having torrents on my external hard drive?

I have movies and music that I have downloaded on my external hard drive. It’s stopped working and now I need to have a data recovery service performed on it. Will they report me? Will they know? Can they see files that have been on my PC first (i.e. as I am downloading movies and music to my PC’s hard drive first, then transfering to the xternal drive)?

Yes, they can see files that are currently stored on your machine and can see files that may have been deleted. If the company’s legit, they shouldn’t be going through your files though seeing what you have on , so they won’t see or report you.

If you take your disk to a small, local repair shop, they may get curious and look around your disk, but they still probably won’t report you.

Can anyone recommend a data recovery service in New York City?

I am looking for a good data recovery service (preferably in Manhattan) that is neither wildly expensive (preferably below $400), that will not destroy my hard drive. I’ve heard that bad data recovery services can actually make it impossible for you to ever get your data back. I don’t want to lose my data to inexperienced people. Thanks for any advice.

Also, if there is a company that is really good and affordable that I can mail my Hard Drive to, then that might work too.

Thanks!

You might want to consider this alternative to having someone else do the work:
If you’ve got a lot of valuable files that must be recovered, have a look @ ‘SpinRite’ from GRC.
Does total disk maintenance; checks cable interfaces; many deep disk checks, recovers data & fixes HDD errors; etc.
THE industry standard.
About $90 US; money back if not satisfied.
Money back if not satisfied.
Google for reviews.
Well worth the money.

Works on Mac drives: use Spinrite first, then migrate drive & use the Mac recovery utility on the repaired data.
Does not work with newer “solid state” drives.

What is a good data recovery service?

My Macbook laptop just recently starting having problems and is no longer recognizing the hard drive for whatever reason. Apple can fix it for me by putting in a new HD but I would very much like to save the files that I know are still stored on the old HD. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good mail away or local (to Northen Virginia) data recovery service? How much is this probably going to cost me?

Before you go there, see if a trick in a PC will work on this MAC. Open up BIOS,( F1, or DELETE as SOON as you push the power button),hold it, and see if BIOS Setup Utility comes up. Standard CMOS Setup, press Enter, see if your harddrive is listed,…NO? Scroll down with Up/Down arrow keys to Primary HDD, press Enter. Use the Minus,(-), key until AUTO comes up, now hit ESC to return to the main screen, where you started from, press F10, and enter y, press the Enter key. See if operating system boots up. Just want to see if your HD can be saved so you can download info from it, before you get new one. Recuva, try this freeware,(www.recuva.com)
